Weather going loco in Omaha…
By on June 22nd, 2007
Thunderstorms dominated the Omaha landscape about an hour ago, as numerous inches of rain quickly dropped in about 20 minutes. It was a fun sight to see, especially since we don’t get any like these back in Oregon. I basically dropped the remote down and watched outside my window. Hell, I even took off my shoes and ran outside as it poured. Ok, that’s a lie, but it was pretty cool to watch.
Fortunetly, it was nice enough earlier for the Beavs to take some batting practice at Rosenblatt after the press conference. Lissman actually hit one over the bleachers in left, and Canham and Lennerton tried to match him by goin the other way. Hopefully they saved some bombs for this weekend.
Its nice to have two days off to write stories and relax. Its hot here, and very muggy, gettin actually kinda tired of it, but I think I can gut it out until after the finals
Anyways, I’m ready to take a snooze, so I will talk to ya guys tomorrow before the first game. See ya then chaps, peace.

Omaha: A love hate relationshp
By on June 21st, 2007
Well it is happening again, Oregon State and North Carolina at the Men’s College World Series Finals. It is called that now it is no longer the Championship Series, last summer the committee decided that Championship Series did not sound as good as Finals or something like that.
Well quick round about update on what I have been doing the past few days. I have been back and forth to Rosenblatt Stadium in order to go to OSU games and games of other teams. How often do you see a 270 pound cheerleader who can also mash a baseball when he pinch-hits? John Kruk anyone?
Omaha is absolutely terrific. I hated it for the first few days because it is just so darn hot and humid. The other day I made my way up the street from our hotel to this mall to get a couple of things, it is a pretty neat mall. That arcade Tilt that they have in Lloyd Center in Portland, well they have one of those here, except it has a mini-golf course and is an entire floor. I tried out one of those massage chairs that you pay a dollar for and get a three minute massage. I guess you could maybe call it a massage; it is more so a three minute beating in the middle of a mall it is a painful experience.
Pete and I took in the Henry Dorley Zoo of Omaha the other day and all I can say is that is why I like Omaha now. We spent five hours in the zoo, and that length of time allowed us to finally see everything but a few spider monkeys. They have a dome that has three levels, one a desert, two a nocturnal area and three a bayou. Bayou full of boardwalks, water, rowboats, alligators, beavers and dark (yes the beavers and alligators are separate). Then they have the basic things, but also an aquarium and a jungle (yes a jungle).
Seeing as OSU was victorious we get two days off and have enjoyed our first one by checking out Creighton University and watching a baseball game.
This is just an amazing experience, if it wasn’t I would be pretty peeved that I am missing my favorite band’s first ever show in Portland (which I had tickets to). I do miss my friends from school that I was hoping to spend some time with once I got home from school but, come on I am at the COLLEGE WORLD SERIES and am a baseball freak.

A quality two days off…
By on June 21st, 2007
Its nice to have Thursday and Friday off, get some time to relax and write some stories for the site. We woke up early today to go to practice and it was unreal how hot it was at 10:30 in the mornin. I was preparin for a heat wave, but out of nowhere, the clouds came in, and a possible thunderstorm is headin this way. That’d be sweet to see one since I guess they are way better than the wimpy ones we have in Oregon.
The team practiced today at Crieghton University today, and their baseball facility is horrendous. There’s hardly any seating, and they have the old turf in the outfield and the new turf in the infield. Then they have real dirt around the bags, and the brown turf like Goss has everywhere else in the infield. Yeah, pretty weird lookin. After seein Nebraska’s baseball field, I was a tad shocked to see how bad this one was. Their softball field next door wasnt too bad, but what impressed me was their soccer stadium. Holy schneikees! Easily the nicest soccer I’ve ever seen (even though I’ve only seen like four or five).
Rice. North Carolina. Who do you want to win tonight? Both teams are pretty damn good, I dont know who I’d rather play. UNC is playin lights out right now, so I’m going to lean towards Rice winning.
Well, time to get grub, go Owls! Peace.

Tar Heels stay alive…
By on June 20th, 2007
Good lord Rice, these guys cant figure out how to get to the championship series. They have a day off, are in the drivers seat, and fall flat on their faces against UNC. To their credit, the Tar Heels were agressive and really took it to the Owls. Should be a good one tomorrow on the East side. Dating back to last year, its Rice’s third straight loss when being one game away from the Championship series.
Stoked for tonights game, have Turp throwing on the mound. Hasn’t pitched since the Charlottesville Regional, like alot of our other pitchers, so hopefully the long rest isn’t a bad thing. But hey, we’re well rested overall and will be ready to play. Irvine won’t be easy, they are riding high after coming back to beat ASU in a classic CWS game last night. Should be a quality game. See ya afterwards and Go Beavs! Peace.

A Beautiful Game…
By on June 19th, 2007
Last night’s game was what we needed. A game where both our pitching and hitting came alive. Too much this season we’ve had only one strong focal point with the other being absent. I think it probably led to a mediocre Pac-10 season, but I think last night’s game, everything finally came together. The good thing was we weren’t afraid of them, even though they swept us last month at Goss. I havent seen our offense play that well in quite some time, and it was at the right time. Stutes was unreal, utilizing his fastball and breaking ball and keeping the Devils off balance. We made one of the nations top teams look like they didnt know what they were doing. Now we sit and wait, and we’re one win away from the championship series instead of a dismal three.
Weather’s been cooler but tolerable at least. Temp is around 80 I’d say and unless a drastic change, shoudn’t rain. Just watched UNC derail Louisville to end their amazin season. Quite a pitchers dual, as there were no runs in the last seven innings combined and overall just six combined hits between the two teams. The wind was blowing in, so you would have had to hit the crap outta the ball to send it out. ASU is warming up right now, and they have some hideous uni’s on tonight. That brownish color they have is their uniform color, with white pants, and canary yellow hats and socks. Yeah, pretty uggggly. Should be a good one, I’m pullin for Irvine, hopefully they’re not too tired from yesterdays 10 hour game, haha.
Nice to have the day off, Casey and Peter went to check out the zoo across the street from the stadium, which I guess is huge. Its took them over four hours to look at everything. If I wasnt such a poor college student, I’d be over there myself, looking at the crazy chimps and fat lazy pigs. Oh well, a zoo is a zoo I guess. Once we’re done, time to get some grub. Its meat loaf Tuesday in the media lounge, soooooo I think I’m going to pass. Well, hope everything is going good in Orygun, looking forward to tomorrow, have a good one. Peace.

The Battle of Everlong
By on June 18th, 2007
For awhile there, I didn’t think the CSF-Cal Irvine game was going to ever end. The regular nine inning game went way too long, and in the end, Fullerton got screwed. From what you learn from playin ball from middle school on, you cant lean in to get hit, and somehow, the rock star looking Holiday got away with it. I was in the press lounge watchin the game and me and Mike Parker, who was standing near me, looked at each other in disbelief. Parker was feelin the same way about the call, that it was total BS. But wow, what a throw by the Fullerton leftfielder, that could end up being an ESPN top play tonight on sportscenter. The next hitter finished them off though, and now six teams remain.
Im not 100 percent sold on Stutes starting tonight. Yes, hes our number one guy, so it makes sense. The only problem I have is a power pitcher versus a power hitting team. But then again, you gotta pitch him at some point. He pitched very well against them a month ago, so I think he can do pretty well. His control is what will be key for him, he certainly cant get behind on hitters. On offense, we gotta hit against them. The Sun Devils gave up a combined three hits in the latter two games of the three-game series in Corvallis. Their team ERA is over 4, so they are hittable.
Should be a quality Pac-10 CWS game. See ya afterwards and go beavs, peace.

CWS: Beavers and Sun Devils, Round Five
By on June 18th, 2007
Well, quick preview of the Arizona State game tonight. The Beavers are looking for revenge against a Sun Devil club that pretty much smoked them in the regular season. OSU knocked off the Sun Devils during the pre-season in one game.
Mike Stutes is set to do battle against Josh Satow. Satow shut the Beavers down last time around, while Stutes did his best against one of the strongest offenses in the nation in a loss.
Oregon State needs to put some runs on the board if they want to stay in this one against the run happy ASU ball club.
I spoke with a few of the players at practice yesterday and they do not know really what needs to be done to get past the ASU club. Closer Eddie Kunz chuckled at the question of what needs to be done, revealing that they just need to score a run this time around.
Joey Wong was the dandy of Sportscenter and Baseball Tonight the other day after that sweet double play he turned. A photo of the turn was the pull out poster in the Omaha newspaper and I made sure I grabbed more than just a couple copies.
Joey said he was really excited to be so high on the list, he admitted that Darwin Barney and he thought play number three was more impressive, but they were better then number one. He said that being a top play has been a goal of Darwin and himself during the season. It is no real surprise that they would get onto the Top Ten list; those two are a lethal combo up the middle.
By the way we totally went paparazzi on Cal State Fullerton starter Wes Roemer yesterday after snagging some food after practice.

CWS: Fear the Snout
By on June 17th, 2007
We have officially been in Omaha for more tan just a few hours, like when we posted our first blogs. This place is CRAZY. The whole town is CWS crazy and it is freaking awesome.
Upon arriving we managed to get to our hotel only to need a room switch. Our shower didn’t shower it just bathed. That kind of sucked but we are good to go now. We took a quick jaunt up to Iowa to hit up an Applebees; waiter did not get a tip, which shows how good our experience was. Yesterday we went and picked up our media passes and headed out to the Blatt. The neighborhoods surrounding the Blatt are incredible, restaurants and tons of souvenir opportunities. I had the best pulled pork sandwich ever.
Got myself an “Eater Nation” shirt, gotta rep the Anteaters. Kyle DeVan from the OSU football team is here in Omaha, as is Jami Lanz and Kera Bolen from the gymnastics team. A few of the guys went fishing before the game, Mitch Canham said he got a few big ones while trainer Eric Strickland went up and grabbed one barehanded from the pond.
So far today we have gone to the OSU practice and gotten some food. Sonic is the greatest drive-in I have ever been to. We are going to go merchandise shopping before grabbing some free press dinner a little later.
Hope everyone got to see Joey Wong on Sportscenter and Web gems, pretty rad, Joey was excited when I spoke to him about it.
Also, quote of the day… “I like Hooters and I like Beavers.” This was a local sports radio host revealing he likes OSU and the Rice Owls for the championship.
Au Revoir!

Game one thoughts….
By on June 17th, 2007
Reyes is a stud. The guy just knows how to get batters out, and its not by overpowering batters. He makes them hit the ball, and with the one of the best defenses, it works well for him. He’s really humble too, doesn’t seem like anything really gets to him, very Jonah Nickerson-esque. I like his potential, if he can pitch on this stage, wow, what a future this guy can have. Hopefully that leg pull wasnt anythin too big.
Lots of beach balls at the park in the outfield, that had to be the most entertaning thing I’ve ever seen at a ballgame. Watchin security try to retrieve those balls on the field had me tryin not to raise my voice in laughter, which isn’t exactly the best thing when you are in the press box.
Since when did we win games by hitting the long ball??? Yes, it was only two, but still, its an abberation for this team. And then there’s the defense. Joey Wong is all over ESPN right now for his unreal throw on the double play. Thats what you learn when you go to Sprague High School, Go Olys!
Paterson was great in relief once again, and all of a sudden is becoming our set up guy extroadinare. Its too bad the game went a little longer and became intense, but I guess wins come in different shapes, sizes, and forms.
Overall, great game, both teams played tough. We just had one more long ball than they did. Roemer gets better as the game went on, and silenced our offense until Santschi hit that shot to right centerfield. Wasn’t dominating, but definitely has good enough stuff to have a career in the pros.
Well, its 1:30 am here, need some shuteye, the omaha sun sucked all the energy out of me. This sun is unbearable, especially for a pale guy like me. But hey, we won and now its time for a quality Pac-10 matchup on Monday.
So who do you guys like for tomorrow’s games? UNC and Rice should be a great contest and MSU and Louisville will be interesting to see who will prevail. One thing is for sure. That one team will be headin home and another will be a step closer from the ulitmate prize.
Bed time, good night chaps, great day, to be continued, peace out.

Sun Devils burn Eaters
By on June 16th, 2007
Awesome effort by the Eaters, they played real tough and they really impressed me. The power of ASU was too much and now we play them if we can bust out a win over Fullerton.
Great atmosphere inside and out here at Rosenblatt. Its unreal here with the fans and the tailgating. A good amount of Beaver fans are here, as we talked to some as we walked from store to store. Should be a great crowd here in a couple hours, really lookin forward to OSU fans cheerin it up.
Its hotter than hell here, its gotta be almost 100, and im sweatin profusely being a pasty Scottish guy, but im guttin it out. OSU just took the field and is stretchin out in the outfield. If you think its an amazin stadium on tv, wait till you see it up here, wow.
Im ready to play, cant wait till 6 pm, 4 where you guys are. Go Beavs!
